Dearest Beloved,

Here are my orders. I told you I felt lucky today. Got the orders to get going this afternoon. That’s all I can tell you now. I mentioned that Post 323 is some distance from here in my previous letter.

Love, D

Darling,

Here is a note from 10,000 feet above somewhere in the Southwest Pacific.

Any resemblance between the mode of travel and an airplane in the States is strictly nil. Bucket seats line the sides and we are herded helter-skelter with baggage piled around us, about up to our eyes. The trip has been very comfortable on the whole—quite smooth. You will be interested, and no doubt derive considerable fiendish pleasure from the fact that in the past 24 hours I have had two sandwiches, two doughnuts, and two cups of coffee.

What a time we had getting out of the Hellhole! First, we had a torrential downpour and thunderstorms. At about 2 a.m., there was four inches of water underneath my cot. Happily, everything that was packed was on top of other cots, so nothing was soaked. Then, at our time of departure, well before dawn, came a repeat performance. One other lad and I are making the journey, and we went over to the motor pool to find our transportation to the field, and the jeep was stuck in the mud. We made it. All of it was sheer downright fun because we had an opportunity to get out of that Replacement joint.

I am sitting with my field overcoat buttoned up around my neck with gloves on. As we were soaking wet this a.m., we went up high in the cold. I’d thought we’d die before I could get to my footlocker at the first stop to get the coat out. No breakfast. But again, I say—we took it in our stride, rejoicing to be on our way.

Love you, my Punkin,

D
